Escaping The Cold Winter Weather To Wuhu Island (Wii Sports Resort)

It is the first month of the year meaning, it is cold and gray, it is snowy, and it gets dark super early making everything feel later then it actually is. So I planned a vacation, but not one too far away, all I needed was a Wii Remote, occasionally a nunchuck, and a copy of "Wii Sports Resort". This childhood favorite that required the Wii Motion Plus accessory or for it to be played is one of my favorite Wii games, definitely top 5, and a childhood staple. Some of the games requiring the nunchuck, but most, and many of my personal favorite sports included just needing the Wii Remote with the attachment or a Wii Mote plus. I popped this game in and decided to escape the cold to a place of warmth, not physical warmth but that which comes from nostalgia and remembering times where the only worry I had was making sure I saw new episodes of my favorite cartoons when they first premiered.

My vacation began with selecting my Mii, and then said Mii jumping with several other Miis out of a plane and parachuting on to Wuhu Island. And then I was let loose to pick from the many minigames offered, most of them consisting of just one option, then expanding on the mechanics of what you choose. Working perfectly as you get the game unchanged, and then it expands on the mechanics in a way to make it similar enough, yet also fresh. Such as 100 pin bowling, or taking the sword minigame from a one on one duel into a single player gauntlet around the island.

The progression in this game fits so well, giving the player choices to play the game in it's base more, or do something new. A ton of these expansions add a ton of layers, especially for single player options, whether it is the aforementioned sword duel mode, to flying a plane around the island looking at all the sites. Some of those sites being the locations where you play the other games in this game, giving a really cool feeling of connection and the fact that everything takes place on this island. The balance of single player and multiplayer games in this package, many that can be played on their own, making the game well rounded.

The thing this game nails perfectly, aside from the fun to play games with a great variety, is atmosphere. Much like Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort is a favorite to myself and many because of the atmosphere. The chill music, the simple but cartoony graphics that still look fairly nice, to having games that match this atmosphere. The game is has such a cozy and welcoming vibe. A game that makes me want to play it, a game that I loved as a kid and a game I love now.

Not every game included in this package appeals to me, but the options are nice, the ones that do I can play for hours until my arms hurt, which I did back then and did now. Returning this game after so much time away felt like riding a childhood bike, it didn't take way to long for me to get back in the groove, or remember why I love this game so much to begin with.

I adore Wii Sports Resort, I love it just as much, maybe even more then its predecessor, but I just have so much fun with this game, I love the environment it created, I love just flying around the island. From taking sports that were already good, to giving new versions of sports we loved like table tennis and sword fighting in place of boxing and tennis. A game that is welcoming and cozy during months both cold and hot, a solid time, a great time, a great getaway from back then and even today
