How My Hero Vigilantes Already Has Me Hyped After One Episode
I have been so excited for this, and it really delivered. I love the My Hero Academia series, it is one of my favorite anime of all time, right behind Tiger and Bunny but is definitely in the top five. But then I read the manga for My Hero Academia Vigilantes, which was written by a different author, but is acknowledged as canon and is a prequel to the beloved super hero anime. I like this series more then My Hero Academia, like this is tied with Tiger And Bunny. I still love My Hero, this is truly a two cakes situation, by that I mean it is two pieces of media I enjoy, such as the meme where the guy says "holy crap two cakes!", Vigilantes is the cake I like more, but I love both. So this past Monday, the first episode dropped and... I loved it.
The opening that began captured the feeling I wanted to see in the show that I loved in the manga which is a cool super hero story, that stands apart from the series that shares the same world and even some characters from the base story, standing on it's own and being super fun. That is what the opening song and ending song are, not just good songs that I can listen to as the show begins and ends but also outside the show, but are just fun. Both of them being good songs, with great visuals and were perfect additions to the show.
I watched the Sub and the Dub and both are super well performed, hearing returning voice actors is a treat, and the actors playing our leads all nail the roles perfectly, vocalizing the feelings I first saw on the page. All the performances were great, as was the animation, choice of color, and just the overall presentation of the show. The show used visuals and even comic book effects in moderation to capture the feeling of the show in a great way.
This show also tackles heavier themes then My Hero, starting with some more serious crimes, and even more serious feelings of feeling aimless. Most of the cast is older, our lead Koichi is older, he goes to college and has a job, but feels like he is just meant to be a nameless loser. That is as far as I can go because I highly recommend watching the episode, and reading the manga, but at least watching the episode.
The episode has a good balance of humor, action, and even some relatable emotions. The episode brought to life exactly what I loved about the manga. I have been on a huge animation kick, and super hero kick, I guarantee you will be seeing more of that in this blog in the months to come but , this is a piece of super hero media I can not recommend enough. The story is really solid, the pacing is great, the characters are relatable and also super well written, and there is just so much good going for this story. With it being a prequel there are easter eggs for fans of MHA but even then, not much is lost if someone was to start here. And the anime took all of that and made it work, and I am so happy to say that.
Overall this was a solid watch, and I am so excited for the future, not only seeing this story play out but seeing my friends watch it play out. Seeing what is different from the manga but also seeing scenes in different ways as they come to life off of the page and on to the screen, being told in a different format. Who knows, I am hoping this leads to a movie or two, and maybe even a video game. I really enjoyed it and I cannot recommend it enough.
