James Gunn's Superman Was The Movie I Needed To See Right Now (Spoiler Free)
I was hoping this movie would be good, I love Superman and wanted to see a movie that felt like a comic book come to life, trying my best not to have my expectations for this film be to high. I was super excited for this film, telling many how it alongside the Looney Tunes film "They Day The Earth Blew Up" were my most anticipated films coming out this year, my excitement building as I got closer to seeing both films. Much like that Looney Tunes film, not only were my hopes met, but they were surpassed in every way, leaving smiling ear to ear as I felt like a little kid again. I didn't like this movie, I LOVED it.
This movie will probably be my favorite movie of 2025, if not in the top three, I loved it that much. The action, writing, acting, music, the message, and the visuals, all of it felt like a comic book come to life. A comic book I would want to read over and over.
I will not dive to much into the story as I want to keep this post spoiler free, and dive deeper into this film and its themes at a later date. The story follows Superman as he has to not only deal with the rambunctious puppy, Krypto The Super Dog, his job, his life, and being the hero. Along the way we get Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and more. The story is packed with action, emotion, and even some inspiring moments along the way. The story has comedy, more serious moments, and plenty of moments that would not feel out of place between the pages of a comic book, and that's one of the many reasons why I loved this film.
The pacing of this movie works, there is only a moment or two that I found myself not caring for, and even then those moments may not last long. For every little piece that I did not care for there are for or five larger moments that I loved. This movie made me feel like a little kid again, one that wanted to put on a cape and become a super hero as well. The emotional core of this film is always consistent and feels like a Superman story, packed with great action, some good laughs, bright colors, and characters to love, or in some cases love to hate.
This world feels great, being one I want to see more of, with super heroes and plenty for them to tackle, both personal and to help the public around them. The emotional conflicts are engaging and great to follow just as much as watching a super hero save the day. The problems work because the film balances the conflicts of the story with the personal narratives, fitting everything together wonderfully. The movie has comedy, the movie has great moments, and the movie is even inspiring at points. The movie is just plain fun, from beginning to end, the movie is fun.
Superman who is played by David Coernswet is incredibly well acted, he brings every right emotion to each scene that is needed and I look forward to seeing him on more adventures to come. He captures what I love about Superman as a character in the best ways possible. Krypto steals the show and is an adorable addition who fits perfectly into the movie for some great comedic moments without feeling distracting. Lois Lane played by Rachel Bronshan also did amazing, bringing Lois Lane to life and is always engaging to follow, standing on her own and being more then someone for the hero to save, doing plenty to move the plot along. Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor brings so much to the villain, having great moments on screen and being the villain that fit the story, having moments that fit the tone of this movie and works for every scene he is in. The other heroes are not only well acted but also have great action moments, comedic moments and also fit well into the story, along with plenty of the other side characters whether they are hero or villain. Each emotional scene fits right into the film and doesn't break the pace while pushing the narrative along.
The visuals are bright and colorful, the acting is great with every actor feeling like these characters while still bringing their own spin, there are some very funny moments, and other moments that left me in tears in the best way possible. There is so much good going for this movie, even in the bleak moments there is an air of hope, even though there are some moments where it seems like that hope is all but lost. The film reminded me of why I love Superman as a character, while showing why he is the hero and how he stands out by being an alien and having super powers, this movie is packed with real and relatable emotions, giving us a Superman we can see ourselves in. The message of this movie is simple but powerful, perfectly fitting into this movie alongside many of the other elements that make this movie up. The action scenes are fun to watch, but even the quiet moments look great and look straight from a double page splash. The visuals of this film all look great, and the colors pop right off the screen, making even just standing around and talking look dynamic. The music is also fantastic, much like the writing and visuals that just make this a fun movie.
This movie made laugh, this movie made me cry, this movie made me cheer. I was inspired, I was happy, I felt like a little kid again. A little kid who wanted to be a super hero and save the day. A smile never left my face, long after the credits stopped rolling, so much so I want to see this movie again and can not wait to own it on Blu Ray. This was a great Superman movie, this was a great super hero movie, just a great movie as a whole. Though not perfect, it was perfect for me.
