I Saw TMNT 1990 On The Big Screen In 2025

Last year I saw my first ever movie rerelease with Shrek 2, and ever since I have wanted to see more. I have wanted to either see movies I never saw on the big screen, saw on the big screen but would love to see again on the big screen, or even films I never saw before. When I saw a movie that I absolutely love, the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film from 1990 or TMNT 1990 as many call it was getting put back in theaters, I just had to go. And so I did.

This is a film I have watched countless times, but never seen in theaters. My love of the Ninja Turtles actually began in college, not from childhood. One of my best friends and I saw the film released in 2014 directed by Michel Bay and then proceeded to watch a ton of TMNT content on YouTube as well as the other movies. He and I would end up watching every single TMNT film that was released in theaters from the classics all the way up to Mutant Mayhem, so even though I was aware of them when I was younger but not really a fan, I still had a fair bit of nostalgia for this franchise and this film. I have been going back and watching some of the cartoons I missed and I love plenty of TMNT video games.

When it comes to the TMNT films this is my favorite with Mutant Mayhem from 2023 coming in a close second, but this one still has the best action, comedy, and just the general vibes that makes it a movie I actively try to watch at least once a year, with friends or on my own.

There is some dated lingo and special effects in this movie but most of it still holds up super well. Feeling like a TMNT comic book or an episode of the cartoon come to life, the suits used for this movie still look incredible and are so expressive. The visuals, music, and most of the writing in this movie still works so well. The movie is just fun, the plot is easy the follow, and the movie doesn't overstay its welcome. The movie is still fun all these years later. The music in this movie is also great, not only do the pieces of music fit each scene that they belong to, but they are just super catchy as well. Don't even get me started on the credit song "Turtle Power" by Partners In Kryme, I love that song so much.

I got popcorn and an icee, sitting back and feeling like a little kid again, enjoying this movie that I have seen multiple times. The lines are quotable and I was smiling ear to ear every time a line I love popped up in the movie. Seeing the action scenes I knew all too well, even though I could easily watch this at home, of course I own it on DVD, there was something that made this special. Seeing this made me want to see more rereleases of movies, doubly so if I have not seen the movie before. Seeing a movie that came out before I was born, or just missed, and seeing why it the film is so celebrated is such a wonderful experience. It is so cool to see a movie being played alongside movies that are current, and to quote Marge Simpson "I Just Think They're Neat". I had a ton of fun seeing this, and want to see more rereleases when my schedule allows, the only shortcoming is they usually only run for a weekend or a short run. In the case of this film I missed the initial dates but I am so glad the run was extended so I was able to catch it.

This experience was absolutely wonderful, sitting in the theater as if I was taken back in time to when this film was brand new. Being reminded of the jokes that made me laugh, the action scenes I loved, and all the pieces of this movie as if it was the first time I was watched it. And I am beyond excited for the rerelease of TMNT 2 Secret Of The Ooze, I will definitely see it if I can find the time. It's a cool experience to step back in time and watch a movie we love in theaters. Cowabunga!
