I'm A Punckrocker Yes I Am
Spoilers Ahead For Superman 2025
The film has one message and it is shown throughout the entire film, being kind to others, and trying to better yourself. That's it, that's what it's all about. This movie is all about the idea of being kind to others, putting kindness into the world, and putting your best foot forward always. A simple message, one we have seen before, heard before, in so many forms of media from movies, to books, and so much more. Yet for this movie, that is all I needed to see, this is all I needed the movie to be about.
One scene in particular when Lois talks with Superman when he is feeling defeated and she just encourages him that his kindness is "the new punk rock". That being kind should be the norm in a world full of ambivalence, that his good heart and wanting to just help people is cool. Later in the movie, Pa Kent , his earth dad, does the same, telling him how his choices shape who he is, not what anyone else says about him. Both of those scenes had me producing tears, even more so when Pa Kent tells the hero of this story how proud he is of his son, and how he has gone out to go above and beyond for others.
Superman faces so much in this movie from others opinions, to his own personal struggles, all while dealing with the super villain plot of the movie and even working with other heroes, yet he does not waver in wanting to help others. He still wants to work with others, be with Lois, and give his all, he WANTS to be a super hero. As he says early on in the film, he only wants to represent himself, and doing good. The film shows Superman getting upset, angry, sad, happy, it shows him being human. It shows someone who makes mistakes but still wants to give his all and stand by what he believes in while wanting to grow and be better.
We see him want to save a monster that is attacking the city, and a squirrel in the same scene.
When he stands up to Lex, he does it as an equal, not looking down at him. Approaching from an angle of someone who doesn't want to beat Lex, but rather work with him, and see Lex turn things around, believing in someone who has put him through the worst of the worst from the moment the film start, reaching out his hand to Lex in a moment of offering peace, sticking to his guns on knowing there is always another way.
One aspect that stands with me, is how the way Superman lives, inspires others. We see other characters, stepping up and wanting to help out, also driving in that Superman can not do everything. Showing how they step up because the title character can not be in two places at once, and how they claim at one moment to not be involved, and decide to change their minds and help out. This movie shows how showing kindness can inspire others to do the same, we help out not with expectation but with hope that it can lead to better things.
Hope is one of the major themes of the movie, there are moments where it seems the villain has the upper hand, yet the film never is downright bleak. There is always a tinge of optimism, showing help can come from someone lending a hand, or just kind words from a loved one. The moments where Lois and Pa Kent encourage Clark to sill put good into the world, and also show him that he is seen, are not only well written but emotionally powerful and drive home just one of the many reasons I love this movie so much. This film has so much heart, it was a reminder that we do good, not for reward but to just be nice, to put that light into the world. The film ending with him appreciating his earth parents as the song "Punkrocker" plays, standing by the theme that kindness is truly punk rock.
