Songs I Keep On Repeat: I Stand Alone (Quest For Camelot)
Is it possible to have nostalgia for just one aspect of a piece of media but not the whole thing? I think so. For me the movie Quest For Camelot is not one I watch often but the music from the film, is pretty great. For goodness sakes "The Prayer" originates from this movie, but that song is for another day or blog post I should say. For this post I wanted to talk about the song "I Stand Alone", this song is one that should not be overlooked and here is why.
It has been a minute since I talked about music, so why not talk about a song that I both enjoy and also love to use to relax.
In the context of the story, our leading man who is blind, and whose name eludes me and I am too lazy to look up, explains his life philosophy to the main character. I listen to this song out of context exclusively but to me it makes a better song then the film it belongs to. I did watch the movie when I was younger so I am familiar with the movie but I remember only pieces of it, such as the axe chicken played by Jaleel White (yes that is real). As I mentioned, this song has always stuck with me, I always enjoyed it.
The instrumentation is calm, the song is soft but swells at moments and is just an overall good listen. The lyrics do tie to the character and story but also like the title implicates stand on their own. The lyrics can easily be removed and just be lyrics about someone who prefers to fly solo. The lyrics are very memorable and work well with the instrumentation.
The song is packed with emotion and it is conveyed well, the lyrics showcasing someone who has been hurt and has walls up. The instrumentation working hand in hand by being soft yet also growing as the song progresses. The use of nature in this song works well, talking of trees and being in places overlooked by most. The song beginning with a bold statement that some will find relatable, those who proudly do not want to rely on others.
The song has relaxed me because even though it is full of bold statements about being self reliant it is so soft and soothing that it still conveys the message while not being loud for the sake of being loud. A good song can be at any tone and any pace but still connect to the one listening if done well. This song conveys the emotion it wants to convey well, despite it's more calm feeling.
There is not a lot to say about this song, I just find myself falling asleep to it, enjoying the lyrics, and listening to it often. Unlike other times where I talk about a song from a show or a movie, I feel no connection to the movie this song comes from. I want to look and see if there are more songs or aspects of pieces of media that I enjoy so much even more so then the piece of media that houses it. It could be a fun challenge to seek out more examples of this. This song is incredible and worth a listen, I even recommend it without the visuals as they are just trying to be comedic and the jokes do not land. The song has powerful lyrics, a sweeping score, and has emotions in some may relate to. At first it seems like a soft song, but it holds more then just a relaxing tune, and it truly stands head and shoulders above where it came from.
