Jingle All The Way Is A Black Friday Movie
At the time of this post, Thanksgiving is almost here, and with that comes times of food, family, and of course, shopping. Black Friday is no longer a single day, but rather a period of time; stores both online and in person now hold deals throughout the week or even earlier.
People are now pointing out that some films are Thanksgiving films, just like how Halloween and Christmas have movies, such as "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," for example. Well I have a movie to add to this list for "Jingle All The Way", a film about a absentee father played by Arnold Schwarzenegger trying to get his son an action figure that is sold out everywhere, dealing with plenty of wacky antics along the way, such as a neighbor who wants to ruin his home life, and a postal worker on the same quest.
I have watched this movie since childhood on VHS, but I only just realized that yes, this movie takes place during the Christmas season, but it applies to more than just one time of the year. This movie is also a perfect representation of Black Friday, especially when it was condensed to one set time, before everything could be bought online or the deal even came in October for the product someone could be looking for.
The movie is about beating crowds, looking for an item everyone wants to buy, going to malls, stores, and trying every avenue. This movie is full of Christmas decorations, parades, and even a fight with multiple Santas and a reindeer, some of the scenarios highlighting the silly nature of a family movie, but there is some realism in this movie. Wanting to purchase something and going from store to store is something that we no longer have to deal with, but items go out of stock online, and sometimes all the preorders get taken before we can secure an item.
Game consoles bring this movie to mind, and the rush to preorder a new system, such as the Switch 2 this year, or even trying multiple stores in order to secure one, which reminds me of the movie "8 Bit Christmas," which I should discuss at a different time. "Jingle All The Way" is usually the movie we play when decorating at my house. It has enough laughs, and we have all seen it enough to make for good background noise. It isn't a heavy-hitter movie such as "Home Alone" or "It's A Wonderful Life" that I want to watch during the midst of the Christmas season. but rather a movie I welcome it with.
This is a film about trying to race people in order to spend money on a product, and that just reminds me of Black Friday. The movie is beyond silly, but I enjoy how silly it is, taking a real scenario and making it as outlandish as possible. I usually lose focus by the end of the movie, where there is a large-scale fight at a parade, even using a jetpack and gadgets, which just makes me question the budget of this parade. There are still plenty of memorable moments and outlandish jokes, so this movie is a must for my family and me every year.
I mean, every year I find myself at least once saying "Put That Cookie Down!", which still makes me laugh even thinking about it. A movie about racing the clock, and about five hundred people to make Christmas special, if that's not what Black Friday is, then I don't know what is, and this movie, nails that feeling.
